Welcome Statement

My name is Elizabeth Cannon and I am a Biology major, Entrepreneurial Studies/Media and Society double minor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. My current career goal includes getting my Master of Public Health at Imperial College in London, U.K. where I plan on specializing in Global Health. The Leads program is what inspired me to get into Public Health where I hope to research how social media algorithms impact the mental health of pre-teens students in the United States. It has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone in order to help others in an efficient way.

Through seminars and workshops, the certificate program has allowed me to develop important problem solving skills, as well as get involved in the Colleges local community. It has given me an opportunity to learn how to get involved in the Geneva, NY community, specifically through the YEA! Mentoring Program at Finger Lakes Community College. As a mentor, I was able to help a young girl pursue her dreams of opening an art studio. The YEA! program gave me the opportunity to further hone my leadership skills with "real-world" application. I will continue to actively seek roles in which I can be a leader and help others. The Leads program gave me a solid foundation for leadership at a colligate level and I am excited to see how future opportunities will continue to hone my leadership style and skills.

What does ethics mean to me?

My ethical ideology stems back to my lower school days when I first learned the golden rule. You may think to yourself, that seems a little basic for someone who has completed multiple ethics courses and seminars. But, I believe that the ideology of:

"Treat other as you would want others to treat you"

is the foundation for all ethics. This statement can be used all situations and should be brought up consistently throughout life. It reminds you that at the end of the day you must treat others with respect, kindness, and acceptance. This ideology has laid the foundation for my own ethics which I have continued to build on through my own experiences and courses.

Leadership Work

Young Entrepreneurship Academy! Mentor (12/15/21-05/15/22)

I helped a young entrepreneur with plans to start her own art studio. We worked through a business plan and I helped her to create a compelling pitch for an investor panel. It was really fun to apply the skills I had learned from my entrepreneurial studies minor to this experience. I loved being a mentor and hope that I will be able to mentor again soon.

Doc. Loc. (08/21-12/21)

For my entrepreneurial studies minor, we had the opportunity to work with a team to develop a start-up. My team and I worked together to develop 'Doc. Loc' a medical information platform. The start-up was initially my own idea and I had to lead my team, who had very limited experience in the medical industry, through the confusing terminology and challenges. In the end, we successfully pitched our idea to an investment panel.

Cayman's Shadow (2016-2018)

In high school, a friend and I started a non-profit to promote suicidal awareness after the death of a good friend, Cayman. We raised money by selling blue ribbon stickers which we marketed via social media. We recruited and managed a team of ambassadors which helped us raise over $3,000 to donate to the ASPCA in honor of Cayman.

VirtaMed Intern (2017)

When I was in high school I had the opportunity to have an internship in Zurich, Switzerland where I was able to further develop my communication and leadership skills. The start-up specialized in virtual reality medical simulation and was used to train surgeons in the field. My boss threw me out into the field where I taught surgeons about our products, navigated Switzerland, and completed many hours of research discovery for new products. I lead meetings once a week and learned how to efficiently brainstorm ideas as a team, as well as improve my public speaking skills during the weekly meetings.
